MOTS-c Overview

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a synthetic, biologically active peptide composed of 16 amino acids. It is unique as a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear DNA. Since its discovery in 2015, MOTS-c has been studied extensively in controlled experimental settings for its autonomous roles in cellular signaling, metabolic homeostasis, and tracking systemic regulation.

History

MOTS-c was first described in 2015 following the discovery of short open reading frames encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Identified as a mitochondrial-derived peptide with signaling activity, it has since been studied for its ability to activate AMPK pathways and support molecular stress resistance. This discovery expanded the understanding of mitochondria as signaling organelles beyond energy production, positioning MOTS-c as a key peptide in mitochondrial biology research.

Research Findings

MOTS-c has been studied in mitochondrial, molecular, and systemic models, with research highlighting its role in mitochondrial function, AMPK pathway activation, and signaling dynamics. Studies also report activity in substrate utilization, downstream markers, and molecular stress responses in preclinical settings.

Key Areas of Research:

  • Mitochondrial: AMPK, signaling, pathway dynamics

  • Molecular: Mitochondrial function, stress response, remodeling

  • Systemic: Signaling, resilience, viability

Together, these findings suggest broad experimental potential for MOTS-c across mitochondrial, molecular, and systemic pathways. By engaging mitochondrial biology and modulating AMPK and stress response pathways, MOTS-c provides a versatile platform for research into pathway characterization, molecular dynamics, and systemic resilience in laboratory settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our products and processes.

Each vial contains exactly what’s shown on the label. For example, a 10mg vial has exactly 10mg of lyophilized peptide. Researchers can divide it into smaller portions—like four 2.5mg measurements—but the total amount remains 10mg.

Peptides are supplied as lyophilized powder. They do not come reconstituted, and any extra supplies must be sourced separately for research applications.

In lyophilized powder form, peptides stay stable for up to 2 years. After reconstitution, it should be refrigerated and is generally stable for up to 2 months.

Products from us do not include usage instructions, as they are strictly for in vitro research and prohibited by law for human or animal use. Misuse or unlawful application will result in permanent denial of service.

Lyophilized peptides should be stored away from heat and light. Once reconstituted, they must be refrigerated to maintain stability and efficacy.
